Yellowknife is linked to Alberta and the South Slave region via the Mackenzie Highway and Highway 3. The highway is paved and well-maintained. From northern British Columbia, the Deh Cho Travel Connection links to the Mackenzie Highway. Car rental is available in Yellowknife, and bus service connects the city to Hay River and Fort Smith.

Yellowknife is the major airport in the Northwest Territories, with direct flights from Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Whitehorse and Iqaluit. Yellowknife is also the starting point for flights to most other communities in the Northwest Territories and western Nunavut.
